Adult dermatology

General adult dermatology at the Brussels Skin Center

Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center provides care for all types of adult dermatological pathologies.

Many pathologies can affect your skin such as acne, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea.

Learn more about the most common dermatological conditions.

Acne

Acne affects 25% of adults with lesions occurring in periods of flare and remission. Male sex hormones (androgens), also produced in small amounts by women, play an important role as they stimulate the development of the sebaceous glands and the production of sebum.

Acne can impact on body image. Therefore your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center is there to provide a listening ear and offer personalized treatments.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic condition in which areas of redness appear on the cheeks, the nose and then on the forehead and chin. If left untreated, this redness can become permanent, small blood vessels become dilated and small red spots appear. These can possibly lead to nasal hypertrophy (rhinophyma). Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center can offer you the most appropriate treatments.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis results from chronic inflammation of the skin, leading to accelerated skin cell renewal. The cells mature abnormally, forming flaky patches that peel away. The course of the disease is unpredictable and can have a significant psychological impact. Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center is there to listen and can offer you treatment and personalized monitoring.

Eczema

Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs in periods of flare and remission. It is accompanied by rash, fine vesicles, scaly patches and itching. If scratched, these patches will weep, irritate and may become the seat of bacterial infection. If this happens, it is important to see your dermatologist promptly.

Warts and verrucas

Warts and verrucas are caused by papillomaviruses (HPV). Once the virus has established itself in the epidermis, it triggers abnormal cell proliferation in the form of rough skin growths.

Warts can be unsightly, contagious and multiply rapidly. Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center will offer you an effective treatment.

Mycoses

Mycoses are infections caused by microscopic fungi. These “opportunistic” infections generally occur after a lowering of our natural defenses (fatigue, taking medication, stress, etc). They can affect the skin and the nails and take various forms including itching, plaques, scaly patches, change of coloration, etc.

Hyperpigmentation (melasma)

Pigment spots can occur as early as our 30s. They may be linked to sun exposure causing hyperactivity of the skin’s pigment cells. If one of these spots changes in appearance, becomes fragile (bleeds or peels easily) or is unsightly, your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center can offer you a suitable solution.

Hair loss

Hair loss takes different forms and has a variety of different causes and mechanisms. For example, some deficiencies in both men and women can be caused by excessive receptivity to androgen (male sex hormones). Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center can offer you different treatments to slow down hair loss, increase resistance and/or stimulate hair regrowth.

Nail diseases and disorders

Nails can come under attack from various diseases and disorders: fungal or bacterial infection, loosening, thickening, ingrowing nail, etc. These may well be unsightly but can also be painful. In all these cases, your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center can offer you an appropriate treatment.

Skin cancer

Your dermatologist at the Brussels Skin Center offers skin cancer prevention, diagnosis and monitoring services. Please refer to our “skin cancer” section for more information.
